Hilton-Holden House

The Hilton-Holden House is one of the remaining "safe houses" associated with the Underground Railroad in New Jersey. Built in1854, by David Le Cain Holden, a banker and amateur astronomer, the house is a four-story frame, eighteen-room building, once referred to as the Holden Mansion. Holden hid fugitive slaves in the basement of the house, which had a fireplace for the temporary occupants. As an amateur astronomer, Holden had an observatory on the roof of the house from which he received signals for the movement of the slaves he sequestered in his home.

Afro-American Historical Society Museum

The Afro-American Historical Society Museum was organized as a committee by Captain Thomas Taylor, President of the Jersey City Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. In 1984, the Afro-American Historical Society Museum obtained a permanent location on the second floor of the Greenville Public Library. Its holdings include the Pullman Porters collection, which tells of the African American railroad workers who were central organizers of the civil rights movement, some 800 artifacts relating to the NAACP in New Jersey, approximately 250 quilts dating from 1841 to the present, posters of the civil rights marches, musical instruments and photographs of New Jersey's historic African American churches.

Hoboken Historical Museum

Founded in 1986, the Museum's mission is to educate the public about Hoboken's history, diverse culture, architecture and historic landmarks. In 2001, the Museum moved into one of the oldest buildings on the waterfront, in the former Bethlehem Steel shipyard where it maintains a series of rotating exhibits. Through its Hoboken Oral History Project, the museum and the Friends of the Hoboken Public Library have been capturing the recollections of longtime residents, which include stories about mom-and-pop shops, the city's many movie palaces, jazz clubs, vaudeville performances, political campaigns, ethnic traditions, and factory jobs. The memoirs are available via the museum's chapbooks as well as educational programs.  The Museum is open six days a week, 2 - 9 pm on Tues. - Thurs., 1 - 5 pm on Fridays, and noon - 5 pm on weekends.
