Zion Lutheran Church

New Jersey's oldest Lutheran congregation, Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oldwick, NJ, was founded by Aree van Guinee,  a freed slave.  Born in Dutch Guinea, Africa, van Guinee held the congregation's first service on August 1, 1714, at his home.  A dedicated Christian concerned about the spiritual welfare of his family and neighbors, the van Guinees had been members of the "Dutch" Lutheran congregation in Manhattan since 1705.  Van Guinee later moved his family to the edge of the western frontier (New Jersey) and became a property owner. COUNTENANCE: Notable County Facts & Faces

Hunterdon County Slave Manumissions

The earliest reference to manumission of slaves in the colonial laws of New Jersey was in "An Act for Regulating of Slaves," passed March 11, 1713/1714. This as well as subsequent legislation discouraged the freeing of slaves and placed several requirements on the manumitting slaveowner.  Failure to follow such stringent policies would result in the manumission becoming legally void.

This digital collection, presented by the New Jersey Division of Archives and Records Management, includes original manumission papers filed by Hunterdon County slaveowners as early as 1788.  Although, well over 500 acts of manumission during the period 1787-1856 are recorded in the Hunterdon County manumission books, original papers for only 56 are included here. The series is arranged chronologically. The items have been listed using the following format: name of slaveowner: name of slave (age if recorded), other identifying information if included, location, date [remarks].

Nationally, the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution (ratified by the State of New Jersey on January 23, 1866) outlawed slavery. However, the state's legislature never passed a law actually abolishing the practice.
