Springtown Stagecoach Inn

The Springtown Stagecoach Inn has had a long history in the community of Pohatcong that includes serving as an inn, blacksmith shop/forge, store, private residence, grange, municipal garage and Town Hall.  However, its most important usage may have been serving as an Underground Railroad safe house. According to local oral tradition the inn was used to provide protection for fugitive slaves seeking freedom from a life of bondage.

Shippen Manor/Oxford Furnance

Situated adjacent to the Oxford Furnace, this historic home and former industrial business was the residence of William Shippen II, the sole owner of this 4,000 acre estate and furnace tract. Shippen's investment was in natural resources agriculture, water power, forest products, and mineral deposits. The Manor in which he built in Oxford, NJ, included tenant farms, a gristmill, saw mill, store, and some sixteen slaves (noted in an early census) as caretakers of the property and household.  It has survived the centuries and is now open for touring.  Hours are the first and second Sundays of each month, 1-4pm, except on holidays and weekends. Mid-week tours can be arranged by appointment. The suggested donation is $3; students and young children are free. For more information, call (908)453-4381.
