Centenary College - African American History & Ethnic American Literature (Courses) Centenary College offers the following African American History & Ethnic American Literature courses:
- African American History I
This course is a study of the history of African Americans from the origins of humankind in Africa, to the Middle Passage, slavery in colonial America, blacks in the Revolution, the rise of southern plantation slavery, and the slavery crisis up to the Civil War.
- African American History II
This course begins with blacks in the Civil War and follows the story of African Americans through Reconstruction, World War I, the Great Depression, and World War II. Major emphasis will be placed on the Civil Rights years following the Second World War.
- Ethnic American Literature
This course examines representative American writers of various ethnic minority groups from a socio-historical and literary perspective. Novels, autobiographies, dramas, and poems of five groups of writers will be examined, including: African Americans, Native Americans (American Indians), Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Jewish Americans.
